The Iceland Revolution
We call “revolution” to the Egyptian or Tunisian political changes because they have removed tyrants… but what word should be used to name revolutions that make people’s voice to be listened by politicians named Democrats who believe that democracy is only voting every 4 years? We have so devalued our democracies, naming them “democracy” when they were not, naming “Representatives of the People” who clearly do not represent us, that now, when in Spain we go out to say a few things to a minister who does not hear us, we are branded as anarchists, reds and other things.
Nearby, in Iceland, has been a quiet revolution, so named because it has thrown another power away, the neoliberal political and financial support that caused the current crisis, and because we have not heard too much of it in the media.
In Iceland, by means of saucepan-bangings and peacefully:
- His government in full was obliged to resign
- Major banks were nationalized
- The debt that the banks had contracted to the Netherlands and Britain was rejected
- Their Constitution will be rewritten through a People’s Assembly
- A new legal framework is being designed to protect investigative journalism and freedom of information in order to journalists, sources and Internet providers can feel safe.
We would carefully watch Iceland to better understand what happened in this country where democracy really can have the dignity of such name.
Internet spreads information and ensure that we feel more free and have more power collectively. This is a revolution, certainly in the sense of change, because it is dropping the masks of politicians who rule without listening the people and industry lobbies that pressure without being aware of their practices. Building a better democracy, demand transparency and seek the common good should be implicit concepts in a pluralistic system, regardless of political parties. But it is critical that voters are informed, are alert and know what is happening.
They can use all labels they want, the change is unstoppable. Julian Assange spoke of digital McCarthyism promoted by Washington and even Richard Stallman has been named communist by promoting free software philosophy, by speaking about community: we all are equal, all together and sharing knowledge. I call it culture of Internet, and if asking for a better democracy where our voice were heard on every issue on which the politicians were legislating on our behalf is a revolution, yeah, tell me what place where we should go.
We are not the model, we have a job pending.

“October 5, 2011. Tens of thousands of protestors gathered, in solidarity, at New York’s Foley Square. As voices were drowned out in the sea of people, the language of signs prevailed.
